Where it all started
I was born into a family of farmers. My father, my grandfathers, and their fathers and grandfathers, were farmers. Growing up in the country, with the wind in my hair and the smell of fresh soil in the air, I developed a love for the land and for growing food.
Some of my earliest memories are of riding in the truck and tractor alongside my dad. Riding horses was one of my all-time favorite activities that helped mold my heart to that of a country girl. I learned to drive a tractor at an early age and was helping my dad bring in the wheat harvest by the time I was in my early teens.
After I graduated high school, married, and graduated college, Kelly and I started our family. While Kelly was in graduate school, we farmed to help make ends meet for our young family. For the next couple of decades, I focused on raising our children and serving in the church. At one point, we were missionaries to Mexico for a few years helping with Christian children’s homes.
Throughout our years of living in various cities, I always had a desire to get back to the country. In 2019, we, along with our eldest daughter, began searching for rural property. We found some beautiful acreage in southwestern Missouri, and the dream of once again living in the country was fulfilled. New Morning Farms, the urban farm, was going rural!
Today
Since I founded New Morning Farms in the city, growing elderberries and blackberries, Kelly and I dug up the elderberry and blackberry plants and moved them to our new farm. That first spring of 2020, we added chickens and ducks. Later that year, we added a couple of steers, and then a few goats.
Over the next couple of years, we continued to immerse ourselves in homestead education, reading and watching many YouTube videos, attending an annual homestead conference, and visiting with other homesteaders and small family farmers.
Today, New Morning Farms has a bull, four cows (one milk cow), seventeen goats, four sheep, thirty-three chickens, fourteen ducks, four geese, eight rabbits, eleven cats, and seven dogs. In addition to increasing the number of elderberry and blackberry plants, we have added raspberries and strawberries, and were thrilled that the farm we found already had an established orchard with apple, pear, peach, and plum trees.
For now, Kelly continues to work in town and help me with building projects on the weekends. We’re working to bring him home so we can farm full-time together.
The Legacy
New Morning Farms began as a dream in my heart. Kelly, as well as all of our children, have helped the dream become a reality. Our grandchildren love coming to the farm to play and help feed the animals. The produce and products from the farm have blessed our family, and as the dream continues to expand, our products are now blessing those around us. That’s the legacy we want to leave: healthy produce, happy animals, sustainable farming.
